United World College - Overview

United World Colleges (UWC) is unique. It is the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world – selected on personal merit, irrespective of race, religion, politics and the ability to pay – with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding.

UWC was founded in 1962 and originated in the ideas of German educationalist Kurt Hahn. Hahn believed that much could be done to overcome hostility and conflict if young people from different nations, races and religions could be brought together to learn from each other.

Today there are fourteen United World Colleges (links posted in side bar), each with its own distinctive character, but sharing a common mission and values. In the turbulent world of the twenty-first century, these values are as relevant today as they were in 1962 – perhaps more so.

UWC offers a rigorous 2 year academic program using the International Baccalaureate with a strong emphasis on community service.

AC 86-88

One of my fellow students at Atlantic College from 1986-1988 posted this on his Facebook page.

"I value life, friendship and equality. I treat others the way I want to be treated, with respect, understanding, love and kindness. I am optimistic most of the time, support peace and hate violence, and wish to live in a better world".

His name is Khalid and he is the Omani ambassador to the UK.
UWC does make a difference :)

Application Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements:
• Bermudian or entitled to Bermudian status on your 18th birthday
• Be between 16 and 18 years of age
• Completed five years of education locally

Applicants are expected to have a solid academic record. The I.B. is a challenging program and the UWC environment adds a very active and busy lifestyle as a result of community involvement and extra-curricular activity.

Applicants deemed ineligible because they are not Bermudian, have three options regarding the application process:
1. Apply to the National or Selection Committee where he/she is a citizen (‘home’ country).
• If the application is accepted, he/she will be expected to be in that country at the time of the interview and/or when other selection events are held.
2. The Bermuda Selection Committee, with the permission of the ‘home’ country, can conduct an interview and make recommendations to the ‘home’ country Selection Committee.
3. Apply directly to certain colleges under the International Quota system.
There are extremely limited awards for International Quota (IQ) applicants and in most cases successful applicants will be expected to pay their own fees and costs.

African trip - "a liberating experience".

Maya Beckles is one of many young Bermudians to go abroad with the UnitedWorld Colleges (UWC) programme. The UWC is an international organization that has sent thousands of students abroad to one of 12 UWC schools to complete their schooling.

Students come away with an International Baccalaureate - and the experience of a lifetime. Maya Beckles shares her story.
