United World College - Overview

United World Colleges (UWC) is unique. It is the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world – selected on personal merit, irrespective of race, religion, politics and the ability to pay – with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding.

UWC was founded in 1962 and originated in the ideas of German educationalist Kurt Hahn. Hahn believed that much could be done to overcome hostility and conflict if young people from different nations, races and religions could be brought together to learn from each other.

Today there are fourteen United World Colleges (links posted in side bar), each with its own distinctive character, but sharing a common mission and values. In the turbulent world of the twenty-first century, these values are as relevant today as they were in 1962 – perhaps more so.

UWC offers a rigorous 2 year academic program using the International Baccalaureate with a strong emphasis on community service.

Karim was at the top of our rankings due to his outstanding school and extracurricular references, solid academic grades and thoughtful and open-minded nature. The Selection Committee was impressed by his maturity, discipline and honesty. Karim is an outstanding athlete and will be attending the CARITA games in track and field and has represented Bermuda in basketball. Karim also studied Spanish which should help him adjust to life on campus in Costa Rica if accepted.

Rachel Biggs and Warren Simmons were asked to Somersfield Academy to present about UWC and announce that Karim was the 2011-2013 Scholarship winner.

Argus Walk the Walk

Thanks to all those alumni that participated in the Argus Walk the Walk last Sunday. I know Nikkita Scott managed to get a team of four together so many thanks Nikkita! To any-one who signed up but was not able to walk, thanks for your donation. It was a fun event and the Centre for Philanthropy and Argus did a great job.
